Upon Your Return Marie Lavender

April 12, 1863

“Oh, dear, did you see the Follets the other day? I’m surprised they have the nerve to show their faces.”
Fara Bellamont nodded to Juliet Masson and attempted a smile. The chandelier lighting cast a harsh light over the dinner party this evening. The tapestry panels about the room depicted a floral motif; huge bouquets of flowers against a crimson and ivory background. There were twelve people at the dining table, mostly comprised of her uncle’s business partners and their wives and daughters. There were also a few available gentlemen whom her uncle occasionally consorted with.
She then heard an unforgivable giggle from her female companion. Focusing her attention on her plate of chicken almondine and roasted potatoes, she tried to ignore the ruckus the lady to her left caused. Juliet must have had too much wine; most young women her age refused to gossip at dinner parties, especially if men were present. Usually that kind of talk was reserved for the parlor or at tea.
The woman began to laugh uncontrollably. “Oh, Monsieur! You are too much!”
Good Lord. What is she about? Fara hadn’t heard either a flattering or humorous comment all evening. Most of the talk had been about the political uncertainty, it being a time of war. The gentlemen were concerned about invasion. Surprise attacks were known to happen, especially if the emperor’s ambitions were getting out of hand.
The gentleman to her right brushed against the sleeve of her dress. She saw his apologetic gaze as she jerked away. When his eyes did not leave hers, an uneasy feeling began in her stomach. She was not used to men looking at her. It had only been a year since her season celebration and though she had danced with many men that night, none had approached her uncle with an offer. She had almost forgotten that look until now.

The evening of the ball, she stood in front of the mirror as she prepared to leave. She wore an emerald gown with a matching glittery, feathered mask, which covered part of her eyes and nose. Her flame-colored locks were piled atop her head in a coronet with the other half falling like a cascade down her back. She wore emerald slippers and toted a like-colored bag. Donning a black shawl against the cool of night, she went to join Rosalie and Helene downstairs.
Rosalie would be acting as their chaperone tonight. She was dressed more conservatively than the girls, wearing a simple gown of blue. Helene had chosen a pink gown and matching mask for a striking contrast against her incredibly dark hair. Fara and Helene giggled with excitement as they left the house and ascended into the carriage directed by Pierre. She and her friend chatted in near whispers on the way to the ball like cohorts plotting a crime.
When they arrived at the mansion, they went inside and were welcomed by the Barrets, the governor and his wife. An aide announced her name to them. Fara smiled as the governor kissed both of her cheeks. “It is a pleasure to meet you too, Gouverneur Barret.”
“The pleasure is mine, Mademoiselle.” He then turned to greet Helene.
Once the formalities were over, the ladies descended down a wide staircase into the ballroom where couples were dancing. Around the edges of the room were chairs, where people could rest. Some ate at small plates from the tidbits of food on trays which were passed on by servants around the room. It really was elaborately planned. Fara did not miss the decorations or the Turkish rugs, the velvet curtains, which covered hidden alcoves where couples could escape from the crowd.
Her stomach tightened in anticipation. She wondered if she would run into Grant and if he would recognize her at the same time she realized it was him. That was the thing about masques. It was so easy to be mysterious, incognito. Despite the fact that the guests were disguised, she hoped she’d still be able to spot him.  She shook her preoccupation away and joined her companions to partake in the meal. They made themselves comfortable in a group of chairs placed along the left side of the ballroom.
When they were done with their repast, Fara and Helene gossiped about the identities of the guests. It was an honor to receive an invitation, especially from the governor. But, no one had been left out.

I want to thank Marie for being my guest author at Seasons of Love.
Tomorrow, I’ll be announcing the winner of her giveaway, plus sharing links on where to buy Your Upon Return and how to contact Marie.
I’ve already added Upon Your Return to my “TBR” list. Nothing in romance reading satisfies me like a good historical, and Marie’s story of love in days gone by promises to be one I’ll long remember.
Thank you, again, Marie Lavender, for being my guest here.

Guest Post - Love In Days Gone By on Seasons of Love Blog

Love In Days Gone By by Marie Lavender

From Christina: I love historical romance. With rare exceptions, it’s all I read — and all I write. I know why I write historicals, and when Marie accepted my invitation to be a guest here, I posed the question to her: What is it about bygone days that beckons you as a writer? Here’s her response.

Love In Days Gone By

By Marie Lavender
What is it about the time period that draws me in?  Let’s start with historical romance.  I have always loved reading historical romance.  And truthfully, I’ve always loved certain time periods since I was a kid.  Being a hopeless romantic, I grew up fascinated with movies like The Princess Bride and Robin Hood.  I loved any time period from the Medieval era to Regency to the turn of the century, any time period where men were still “gentlemen” and women were “ladies”.

At this moment, I have numerous historical works in progress.  Upon Your Return is my first published historical romance.  Truthfully, when I came up with the idea for the book, I wasn’t clear on the exact time period.  A scene just came into my head.  It wasn’t until I did some research that I placed it in 1860s France.  I had a marvelous time researching the décor of the time period, the customs and even the political events.  Seeing the story come to life with period details was very enjoyable for me.

The heroine of Upon Your Return, Fara, gets to stay aboard La Voyageur, Captain Grant Hill’s ship, fairly early in the story, and I discovered a lot about clipper ships in the process of writing the book.  In the sequel that I have just finished, I go into a lot more detail about those speedy watercrafts.  Well, they were fast then, and amazing to a lot of people.  Clipper ships, first built in the 1840s, became famous, clocking speeds of 250 to 400 miles a day when the average ship could do 150 miles at the most.  Newspapers followed the progress of clipper ships and bets were even placed on certain voyages.  The hero of Upon Your Return is the captain of such a ship.  He is both gentleman and sailor, a deadly combination for the likes of Mademoiselle Fara Bellamont.

I want to go back to those words “gentlemen” and “ladies”.  In these time periods, women and men in society had to tread carefully.  They knew just how to act and what behavior was deemed inappropriate.  You will see most of Jane Austen’s characters tread so carefully.  But, historical romances have changed somewhat to accommodate our current beliefs.  We know people had to be proper, but there is one truth you can always count on.  They were human as well.  In that vein, you can imagine things happened that people didn’t exactly talk about.  It was proper not to.  For example, there is a moment in the book where Grant says to Fara, “I do not know how to help you without overstepping the boundaries of common courtesy.”  Of course, propriety must be considered because of her position in society.  But, rarely does Captain Hill let society stop him from getting what he wants or doing the right thing.  And Fara Bellamont, as you will soon find out, is not a “typical” lady of society in all things.

The other thing that draws me to this time period is the entertainment, specifically dancing.  I’ve never been particularly confident on my feet, but I’ve always loved watching people dance and reading about it in historical romances.  The lovely décor, the masked balls, all of it.  I took a dance class once with my fiancé and I have to say that that was what I enjoyed most about it.  The couples dancing.  The waltz was my favorite.  And what do you usually see in movies and books?  The waltz.  I have tried to show this is in Upon Your Return and the sequel as well.  It was actually pretty fun writing about balls.

One other kind of entertainment that was popular was going to the opera.  I’ve never been to it myself and I don’t listen to it all that often, but I have been to see the play The Phantom of the Opera.  It was so magical there when I went.  My fiancé and I dressed up, and I felt like a princess.  The play was so amazing and realistic.  So, I can imagine what Fara must have felt like when she attended the opera.  I did my best to show that in the story as well.

So as you can tell, bygone eras have their appeal.  I have always loved the natural romance of those times, when men and women would bow and a gentleman would kiss a lady’s hand.  Although propriety was still a concern, a romantic’s heart can be charmed by such simple things.  I know I can’t get enough of it.

Goodreads Review for LEATHER AND LACE

Hi, readers!  I just found a Goodreads review for LEATHER AND LACE.

Christine

I enjoyed the slow but gradual connection between Angie and Patrick. Patrick took one look at Angie and knew it was love at first sight. Now he had to convince her. As Angie begins to trust Patrick, she finds herself with an ally to fight the demons after her and her sister Sherrie. A short but sweet HEA book.

I received a copy for an honest review.

A New Review for LEATHER AND LACE!

I just saw this review on Amazon and Goodreads!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced thrill!!!, January 9, 2014
This review is from: Leather and Lace (Kindle Edition)
I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this novel from the author. The story was well-written and the plot so exciting, that I was reluctant to put it down to go to bed. Every chance I had, I opened up my kindle, and I read. The Hero is a very interesting character that keeps you entertained from start to finish, plus he has become my new book boyfriend. The heroin is complex and keeps her lover on his toes. I gave this novel five stars because it deserves five stars! She had me involved in the story and had me hooked! I can't wait to read another novel by this author. She is going places! Buy the book!

Where Do Your Ideas Come From?

"Where do your ideas come from?"

This is the most common question that is asked of writers.  It is also one that isn't so easy to answer.  Unless we were inspired be a specific event, more often than not, these ideas just pop out of the ether.  If you're not a writer, you may look at this skeptically, thinking there is a specific formula a writer follows to get new ideas.  In most cases, it isn't so clear-cut.  I always struggle with that question in interviews.  For some books, it is a conscious decision to create something.  For others, the reasons are a bit more mysterious.  The muse has her own ideas, so to speak.

I look at my 112 works in progress and I think, "Where in the world did all of this come from?"  It is just as baffling to me.  For my historical romance stories, was I inspired by a book or a movie?  Was I inspired by love alone?  Or was it deeper, inexplicable?  Did these characters just have something to say?  Did they briefly take over my brain for that moment while I was so immersed in writing the first scene?  Sometimes I think so.  I surprise myself at times.  I don't often do a tally of the type of stories I have in progress.  I will today just for fun.

Historical - 29
Paranormal - 17
Time Travel/Reincarnation - 3
Contemporary - 65
Futuristic/Science Fiction - 2

Some of these are crossovers so the count may not come out the same.  I have several that are historical, but also paranormal.  Some may be contemporary, but paranormal at the same time.  The time travel/reincarnation stories either start in this time period and move to the past, or vice versa.  Then, there are some of the contemporary stories that may be deemed mystery or romantic suspense.  Some of the paranormal stories may also be dystopian.  I still haven't decided.  I have contemporary romances with characters who are mothers, about to be mothers or ones who have never had children at all.  There is a LOT of variety.

My point here is that in the world of ideas, there are no rules.  Maybe not all ideas will fit into a specific category.  As writers, at least for most of us, we don't know exactly where the ideas come from.  Have I ever been inspired by something I saw on television (i.e. some aspect of crime-solving) or even by something I read in the newspaper?  Of course.  More often than not, I am moved by people.  I am fascinated with human behavior and human psychology.  And I truly believe, at least for myself, that all of these life experiences and seeds of creativity get stored in the mind only to come out later in some form or another, in a single "I've got it!" moment.

To give you an idea of the broad scale of my crazy mind, one day I may be working on a story about a romance between an executive and the woman carrying his child.  The next day, I may find myself writing from the perspective of a trained assassin on a mission.  My ideas can take me anywhere.  I only have to open a folder on my computer desktop to see the variety.  I only have to look at all of my filing cabinets.  And with so many ideas, how could I ever run out of things to write about?  The hard part is deciding what book I want to focus on next.  Right now, I am polishing a historical romance.  After that, the sky's the limit.  I don't always have titles in advance either.  Sometimes I just call the file by the name of the character or summarize it with one word (i.e. reincarnation story) and work on the title later.  If I do have a title, I can use it as a working title and decided if I want to change it in the future.  That's the nice thing about ideas.  They're just ideas until they become a tangible thing, until you fill in the blanks with character description, inner conflict and a good plot to drive the story along.

So, readers, what inspires you?  What sort of "ideas" do you like to read about?  And writers, are your ideas as elusive, as mysterious as my own?  I believe we all have different methods of doing things.  Perhaps with some writers, it is easier to focus on one story at a time.  I use self-discipline as well to finish stories.  My list of 17 books should prove that.

I guess I still find it amusing, however, to see the places my mind takes me.  Here is a list of some of my works in progress, in case you're curious:

Upon Your Return by Marie Lavender

Did you guess right? Our featured author this week is Marie Lavender who will be sharing her new historical romance.

Upon Your Return

Fara Bellamont has always dreamed of having adventures and finding love. She becomes utterly captivated by a man who rescues her one night.
She risked her heart every time she was with him…
But she could not deny him.
Marie says,
Why did I write Upon Your Return? Truthfully, a scene just came to me one day when I was out at a doctor’s appointment. Suddenly, there were these two characters having a discussion and I thought it would be a great idea for a book. As I got further into it, I realized how much Fara wanted her story to be told. She was a pretty special and dynamic character from the beginning, and she just wouldn’t leave me alone until I finished it.

My Journey in 2013

The new year is often a time for reflection and resolutions.  So, why shouldn't I do the same?  Let me step back, take a breath and wipe the sweat of 2013 off my brow.  Phew!  It's been quite a ride.

What have I done this year?  A lot.  Upon Your Return was accepted by Solstice Publishing in August of 2012.  It took some time for them to do the cover art, editing and sort out any final details before it was published in February of this year.

My first guest blog post was in September of 2012.  I began to learn how to blog better after that.  I maintained social networking accounts on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ as most authors do.  After Upon Your Return was published on February 13, 2013, I began promoting it.  In March, I had my first interview on RC Bonitz's site.  I continued to have them as I reached out to many bloggers and promotional venues for books.  I listed myself as an author any place I could.  I promoted every one of my blog posts or interviews.  I started heavily promoting my self-published books, which were published from 2010 to 2012.

Also in February, I decided to update the covers of my books.  I revised them and changed the covers, and I feel they turned out beautifully.  Of course I'm biased.  LOL.

I did a lot of interviews and guest posts from then on, and made sure to make a note of each one here on the blog.  I also maintained another blog, Writing in the Modern Age, which had author interviews, guest articles and poetry spotlights.  I did my part helping my fellow authors.  I also moderated three discussion groups on LinkedIn and three on Facebook.

Somehow in the midst of this madness (don't ask me how), I also managed to work on the sequel to Upon Your Return. I set my mind to it and decided I was going to finish the manuscript.  I finished it in August and I am now polishing it for submission.  It is called Upon Your Honor.  I recently received a contract for a paranormal romance through Solstice Publishing so that should be out sometime in 2014.  And in November, I published a new book, Leather and Lace.

I have plans to re-release all of my books under the same name, Marie Lavender.  For now, they are under different pen names.  I also will have an anthology out soon titled Miss Lavender's Anthology of Ramblings.  Additionally, I am working on a romantic suspense called Certain Death with another writer.  Let's see.  Did I miss anything?  Oh, I'm trying my hand at a new genre for me, but I can go into that at another time.

So, what were all of my milestones this year?  Getting traditionally published, for one.  Aside from the fun interviews I did, I had some excellent reviews of my books.  Upon Your Return made the top ten chart on Indie Author Land in June.  I also met so many wonderful writers and readers through social networking.  Their support has both humbled and encouraged me.  July was also a popular month for Ransom.

Let's see...what else?  In September, I made a book trailer for Upon Your Return.  That was an interesting, educational experience.  September was also a good month for Upon Your Return.  I made record sales for the month with my publisher.  Upon Your Return became a bestseller on Amazon.  In October, I was the featured author of the week on Maurice Tudor's blog.  In the same month, I made both the Top 100 and Top 50 on Authors Database.  As I stated before, in November, I received a contract for a paranormal romance with Solstice Publishing.  When that comes out, it will be my second traditionally published book.  Also in November, I officially released a new e-book, Leather and Lace.  The paperback should be available on Amazon soon.

In December, I received the Liebster blog award for this blog.  And I have written quite a few love poems this year.  Finally, for a milestone, I have to count the fact that I finished the manuscript for Upon Your Honor, the sequel to Upon Your Return, very quickly.  I have many of these things to be thankful for.

As of this date, I have published 17 books, all of which are available on Amazon and Lulu.com.  A full listing is on my website.

It has been a busy year.  I hope next year proves to be just as fruitful.  As for resolutions, I should probably resolve to try to be a bit more organized.  LOL.

I am so grateful to all of my readers for reading either the Kindle or paperback versions of my books.  I am also grateful to the readers of this blog for bothering to pay attention to my ramblings, whether they be random thoughts, a poem, an article, an event or an interview I had.  Your support means so much to me.

Please feel free to connect with me or follow my pages on these various sites:

Thanks again, and happy reading!

Taking a Break from MLB

Yes, readers, that's right. I'm on hiatus for a while. I know I haven't posted for a bit, and that's really the reason why I...
