The Shock is The Worst

 The Shock is The Worst

Abuse can arrive in so many forms, physical and emotional alike. Sometimes I think the worst kind is the one that comes out of nowhere. Anticipating abuse is one type, and I truly feel for anyone who has dealt with such abuse for a long time. I hope those who do have found a way to walk away.

But the type that really gets you is the shocking kind. Perhaps you lived for months or years with this person. You let down your walls. You trusted someone.

And that’s when it happens. Just out of the blue, seemingly for no reason at all. Somehow you’ve stumbled into a bad situation.

At this point, we must all make a choice. Stay or go. Observe, and see if the trend continues, or find a way to leave.

I won’t name any names. But let’s say I got the shock of my life today. A family member struck me. I am 37. I’m hardly a child, and I don’t need to be reprimanded for my words or actions. Hell, why not leave that up to the way we punish ourselves every day, right? And I am not trying to whine here like a spoiled child. This actually happened.

The oddest thing is that this man was supportive my whole life, and only in recent years has his temper drastically changed. So I am left to wonder…was this caused by his health situation, or has he in fact lost it for once?

Not to mention someone I have always trusted lashed out at me. Me! It is hard not to take that personally, even more difficult not to start crying again.

Things have never been easy in my family. With five people always trying to have their say in the same house, it was…let’s just call it a bit challenging to establish any kind of autonomy from the overall conformity in that tight-knit group. It’s one thing to be playing around and accidentally hurt someone. No big deal. A true accident is one thing.

But to hit someone, without any hope of apology? That, my friends, is what we call abuse.

I am forced to admit that I have dealt with some form of emotional abuse from this person for several years – being called names, and tearing me down for my life choices. Because let’s face it. I am a writer. We’re an odd breed, for sure. Yes, I will automatically be different from everyone else in my family. But I hardly think I deserve to be abused.

No one does.

The Libra in me has just had it. October people tend to give up on a certain person at some point. We can only take so much crap before the ‘aloof’ aspect kicks in, and we’re done. We want to back away, keep our distance from that individual for the rest of our lives.

Except when you truly love someone, it gets complicated. You must think about emotions over self-preservation. And even though I’ve stumbled across tons of advice over the years, claiming we should cut out toxic relationships – and normally I’d agree – I know I can’t exactly erase this person from my life. Plus, he’s getting on in years. With his health, who knows? He may not have much time left. Then again, he’s incredibly stubborn.

I guess I’m just…frozen. Stuck in this cage of doubt and circumstance.

I actually find this infuriating on some level, other than the obvious. Why? Well, I climbed out of a bad romantic relationship – physically and emotionally abusive – in my early twenties, and I guess it’s ironic that now I find myself trapped all over again. But for a different reason.

So, what would you do in this situation? I wouldn’t mind the advice today.

Thanks for listening.

Loss Is Difficult

Loss Is Difficult

Grief is a complicated journey. Some people naturally slip into a social environment, and find a type of catharsis in laughter. Others respond by venting their anger at the unfairness of life. And then there are those who require peace and quiet, solace away from the rampant chaos of the world so they can somehow process the loss.

Today I feel numb. I am a private individual; I often keep a lot of events from my personal life in the safety of my own mind. Now I find I cannot do that.

As it is still fresh in my heart, and heartbreaking in its intensity, I lost someone dear to me early this evening. People who don’t have pets won’t understand the bond that you can form with them, how they become a part of you; they are essentially your family. And when you lose them to something even so natural as old age, which we all must face as human beings, it still strikes you in such a poignant manner that you feel you’ll never be the same.

Perhaps that’s true. Grief changes us, alters our very shape inside. Plus, each time you lose someone, they take a little piece of you with them. At least, I’d like to believe that. And vice versa. Anyone can touch our lives, even in the smallest way.

With a pet, it’s always hard to say goodbye. But in some ways, it’s much harder to lose them if you’ve had them from birth. You’ve seen them grow from this tiny creature that used to fit in the palm of your hand. You’ve been there through all the changes in his/her life, just as they experienced the ups and downs of your life. Animals have a unique, almost psychic sense; they know when you’re suffering. If you have pets, you know exactly what I mean. For example, even my most independent female cat has reached out to me today. She senses that something has gone wrong in my world, and perhaps in hers too, since he was a part of her life.

I miss him so much right now. It's hard to believe that just a few short hours ago, I was holding him, and now I can't. Even though I’ve cried more tears than I have in a long time, I know it’s for the best. I would rather he wasn’t in pain or experiencing the level of discomfort he had at the end. So, it’s better for him to have reached Rainbow Bridge, as author Debbie De Louise talks about in one of her books. At the same time, I have hope that I’ll see him again, even if his soul is reincarnated in another form sometime in the future.

Still, it hurts. And I know that only time will ease this ache inside.

Please check out this cat interview with host Sneaky the Library Cat, a unique interview which was done with my cat in August of last year, and I believe honors his personality very well.

So…join me tonight and let’s give my Smokey a proper send-off. Wherever you are right now, buddy, I wish you lots of wonderful kitty dreams, toys and as much food as you want. You were the best…boy…ever…and I will miss you for the rest of my life.

Goodnight, buddy.

If you haven't already guessed, this one is a little different from what I usually write or have published before. Some of the themes are dark and emotional, but no less compelling.

Here is the book trailer.

And please take a peek here with this excerpt. Jack and Caitlyn with their novella, "A Touch of Dawn", are two of my favorite characters in the book.

She took one last glance at her room with the pink walls, the bright pink, glittery comforter and the knickknacks she’d collected through the years. A life had been lived here. A life she didn’t think was a part of her anymore. She mourned the loss just as much as her mother did. Grabbing her suitcase near the door, she fled the room and walked down the stairs, and then out of the house. She took one look at Jack in the car, and ran to meet him.
He gazed at her for a moment longer than she thought was necessary. “Everything all right?” he asked gently as she got in and shoved the case in the backseat.
She glanced at the house. “It will be.”
He started the car and drove away from the curb.
Caitlyn looked out the window, watched the sights fly past, but in truth, she saw little. It was a blur, a mere blip against the overwhelming voices in her head. Her heart ached inside her chest, throat tight with the rise of tears. She wasn’t aware she cried until Jack pulled over into an abandoned parking lot, shut off the engine and drew her carefully into his arms. Sobs tore through her throat and she shuddered while moisture flowed from her eyes. “I’m leaving my old life behind.”
“I know,” he whispered.
“I don’t want to cut ties with her.”
“And you shouldn’t. Your mother loves you.”
“But I can’t be the same person.”
“No, you can’t. No one could.”
She clung to him, pressed her face into his shirt. He smelled nice, like cedar and musk. She wanted to truly return his embrace, but wasn’t sure she was ready yet. “What about your parents?”
He stiffened then. “What about them?”
She lifted her head to look at him. “Are you close to them?”
“No, I wouldn’t say so.” He sighed. “I still stay in touch, but I live a ways from them. I couldn’t be in the same place where I was taken. After what happened when I was a kid, I think they quickly realized I’d never be the same again. I was sent to therapists, whatever they could do.” His voice was tormented. “It wasn’t their fault I couldn’t handle everything.”
“It wasn’t yours either.”
“I’m not so sure. I was terrible at first. I got in trouble a lot.”
"You were a rebel?"

“Oh, yes. I got a wake-up call when I was sixteen, ended up in juvenile detention. I came from a wealthy family, lived over in Portland in the Irvington area. At that point, I realized how stupid I was. How angry. I needed to change.” He sighed again. “I tried harder in school. Finally, I got some focus, knew what I wanted to do. I pursued Psychology at Stanford, to my parents’ dismay. I know my father imagined I’d get involved in the family business, in Thomas International. On one visit back home, I saw a news story about a child who’d been taken and hurt just like me. I knew I wanted to prevent this from happening to other kids and people. I wasn’t naïve. I realized it happened to adults too. And if I couldn’t avert it, I’d help them handle the fallout better than if they did it on their own.”
“You feel you were alone?”
He shrugged. “When you’re in that situation, it’s a bit lonely. So, I didn’t have a support group of others who had been through it before. But I want to be there for someone else.”
She reached up and touched his cheek. From his widened gaze, she knew she had shocked him and perhaps he wanted to pull away from her. She had that automatic reaction with people too. “I admire you, Jack. You’re a good man.”
He frowned. “Ever heard of transference?”
Her jaw clenched briefly. “Don’t be a bastard. I know the way I feel.”
“Well, then.” He chuckled. “You never stop surprising me.”
“I hope not,” she whispered.
He seemed to stare at her for a long time. Suddenly, he leaned forward. When their lips met, it was like a fire burst between them, a flame that couldn’t be extinguished. Caitlyn closed her eyes and submitted to him. His mouth moved across hers with gentle strokes and his tongue met hers just as tentatively. It was just what she needed, that careful discovery, and she responded in kind. His dark flavor was addictive, and after a while she grew lightheaded.
He pulled away, releasing a breath. “Wow.”
“I agree.” She touched her lips. She had been with one man long before she was kidnapped, and kissing had certainly never felt like that.
“I don’t know how to feel about this.”
“Me neither.” She sighed. “You can’t exactly call this platonic.”
“That’s true. Second thoughts?”
“No, not at all.” Though her racing heart said otherwise. But, Jack was so good to her. For her. She just knew, even if it didn’t make sense to other people.

I love those two... ;)

Taking a Break from MLB

Yes, readers, that's right. I'm on hiatus for a while. I know I haven't posted for a bit, and that's really the reason why I...
