The Shock is The Worst

 The Shock is The Worst

Abuse can arrive in so many forms, physical and emotional alike. Sometimes I think the worst kind is the one that comes out of nowhere. Anticipating abuse is one type, and I truly feel for anyone who has dealt with such abuse for a long time. I hope those who do have found a way to walk away.

But the type that really gets you is the shocking kind. Perhaps you lived for months or years with this person. You let down your walls. You trusted someone.

And that’s when it happens. Just out of the blue, seemingly for no reason at all. Somehow you’ve stumbled into a bad situation.

At this point, we must all make a choice. Stay or go. Observe, and see if the trend continues, or find a way to leave.

I won’t name any names. But let’s say I got the shock of my life today. A family member struck me. I am 37. I’m hardly a child, and I don’t need to be reprimanded for my words or actions. Hell, why not leave that up to the way we punish ourselves every day, right? And I am not trying to whine here like a spoiled child. This actually happened.

The oddest thing is that this man was supportive my whole life, and only in recent years has his temper drastically changed. So I am left to wonder…was this caused by his health situation, or has he in fact lost it for once?

Not to mention someone I have always trusted lashed out at me. Me! It is hard not to take that personally, even more difficult not to start crying again.

Things have never been easy in my family. With five people always trying to have their say in the same house, it was…let’s just call it a bit challenging to establish any kind of autonomy from the overall conformity in that tight-knit group. It’s one thing to be playing around and accidentally hurt someone. No big deal. A true accident is one thing.

But to hit someone, without any hope of apology? That, my friends, is what we call abuse.

I am forced to admit that I have dealt with some form of emotional abuse from this person for several years – being called names, and tearing me down for my life choices. Because let’s face it. I am a writer. We’re an odd breed, for sure. Yes, I will automatically be different from everyone else in my family. But I hardly think I deserve to be abused.

No one does.

The Libra in me has just had it. October people tend to give up on a certain person at some point. We can only take so much crap before the ‘aloof’ aspect kicks in, and we’re done. We want to back away, keep our distance from that individual for the rest of our lives.

Except when you truly love someone, it gets complicated. You must think about emotions over self-preservation. And even though I’ve stumbled across tons of advice over the years, claiming we should cut out toxic relationships – and normally I’d agree – I know I can’t exactly erase this person from my life. Plus, he’s getting on in years. With his health, who knows? He may not have much time left. Then again, he’s incredibly stubborn.

I guess I’m just…frozen. Stuck in this cage of doubt and circumstance.

I actually find this infuriating on some level, other than the obvious. Why? Well, I climbed out of a bad romantic relationship – physically and emotionally abusive – in my early twenties, and I guess it’s ironic that now I find myself trapped all over again. But for a different reason.

So, what would you do in this situation? I wouldn’t mind the advice today.

Thanks for listening.

Emma's Corner: Hello, world!

Hello, World!

Greetings, humans! My name is Emma (Munchkin Warrior) (Agent Em) (M&M) Mulrooney...never mind. My list of nicknames goes on and on. And as T.S. Eliot once told all of you insignificant humans about cats, we often have thirty to fifty actual names that even you will never know. For example, my mom (Marie) believes that my name came to her in a dream. Supposedly, she just knew who I'd be before she even met me, and was pretty sure that once she saw me, she'd simply know that I was the one for her. And she says it happened just that way at the Humane Society nine years ago.

Hmm...I don't know about you, but I am certain no human could ever possess such awesome powers. Only cats have psychic abilities. We'll just let her believe she is that smart, okay? Not that I'd ever let any of you think you were in control.

As I was saying...lest you all believe you are the actual owners of cats (it's the other way around, by the way), you have another thing coming to you. And for myself, well, as I've told my humans many times, I am the queen of this realm and what I say goes.

Now, where was I? Oh, yes. Marie probably thinks I'm not smart enough to wield a sword let alone this weak contraption called the Internet. Therefore I've hijacked her so-called blog and it is mine for the day! Ha!

I don't want to bore you completely with human activities, but have you seen the ungodly hours the woman keeps? On this damn machine night and day, supposedly blogging, promoting and writing stories, ignoring my superior self. It's a tragedy, I tell you.

But no matter. I hear Smokey (the fiend of a cat) accidentally scratched her arm earlier. Poor guy, he's quite unsteady on his feet...

She probably deserved that! Not that I'd let anyone besides me - and the inferior felines in this household - do anything to her. That reminds me of the human thing she calls a
fiancé. Bah! We have, shall I say, a love-hate relationship. I tolerate him only, as he always smells like ten other cats. But hey, I'm the only one that notices it! Nothing will upset us more than cheating on our royal selves with different species of felines. And it's horrible, but I've heard he actually scouts pet stores, unable to deny being drawn in by puny meows and pitiful looks that he terms 'cute' (I'm actually the expert on cuteness, just so you know)!

How can you possibly dispute it? Anyway, he's the reason that thing they call Katerina (Kit Kat) entered the house at all. "Oh, poor kitty, you're freezing in the middle of winter so we're going to save you..." And she has never been happier.

See? It's quite unfortunate. Honestly, I can't tolerate more estrogen in this place!

So...did I mention that the humans had guests over last weekend, just during the day for a few hours? Well, it happened. Kit and I did our best to disappear when the doorbell rang, but for me, I can't miss the opportunity to show off this gorgeous hide! When they were all sitting there, visiting, as they say, I could tell my mom was trying to shoot me psychic messages to 'be good', as she likes to instruct me sometimes. But I couldn't resist. Especially when the lady who was visiting decided to rest her dumb foot on me - complete with shoe - just for fun. Seriously? As you can imagine, I did what was necessary and left the room!

Haven't you heard? Just don't mess with a feline, especially one such as me.

Yet, I digress...

Oh, yes. I was talking about Marie. Yes, I suppose this is her blog. Blog...such a strange word, isn't it? It makes me think of that stuff that we get rid of sometimes from our throats. You know, the one has all the hair in it. It's quite disgusting for the humans, but it's no picnic for us either. Anyway, the term is similar to the sound we make when that is happening. So, I shall bee-log you to death!

Don't even get me started on when Marie or one of the other humans actually tries to speak my language.

Speaking of, I am sorely in need of a new cat bed. I will pick hot pink again. You know, my human believes she is the authority on the color, as it's her favorite, but I'll have her know that as soon as she adopted me, I was clever enough - though she claims I was tiny at six weeks - to choose my own bed at PetSmart! Yes, that's right. Annnndd I even selected my own toy. What other kitten could do that at such an age?

It's true. I was born to be a leader, to direct all of you. One day, you will realize that Emma, yes, Emma rules this universe!

It's true. We often humor you humans, and we laugh at your little oddities. But we have more control than you realize. Did you not receive my meow-mo?

And I refuse to hear sarcastic words from another person in the household with a name starting with the letter K. Such a strange one! I imagine she'd respond to this post with, "And all of this coming from a short thing!"

Short...you will be destroyed for that!

Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes. I meant to introduce myself as Emma the cat, the ONLY important cat, that is, and this is Emma's Corner of Marie's blog. That's right. Marie the author. Though I think that's a strong term for someone who has three blogs, an author website and has published 22 books. Surely, you're not a real author until you've reached at least 100, huh? I know you agree! (Chuckles.)

Now, onto more important things. Damn, human, pay attention to me! And for God's sake, get out of bed and feed me! I don't care if you're not an early riser!

For the rest of you humans, I'm signing off... meow, meow, meow, et cetera, et cetera.

As always,

Ruler of the Universe and Supreme Feline,

Emma A.K.A 'the Munchkin' Mulrooney

Prologue

The quilt folded into the box with the ease of well-worn fabric, the fibers soft from years of use, embedded with memories and love. My hand brushed over this fabric of time as I tucked the tissue gently around it and placed the lid on the box.

Last summer I found the perfect Christmas paper to wrap the quilt in; the paper itself is red, green, and white in a log-cabin pattern. The artist must have been quite the quilter, as tiny stitches could even be seen. I used invisible tape to secure the ends and tied the package with strips of fabric.

Using a piece of red fabric and a piece of green fabric approximately eighteen by twenty-two inches, I began by folding it in half, noticing that my hands now looked like my grandmother’s had the summer we made our quilt. I wanted three red and green flowers for the package. I cut the material at six and a half inches, and then in half again at three and a quarter inches. I could hear her voice reminding me to measure twice before cutting. Now, I had two pieces of fabric, one red and one green, measuring three and a quarter by twenty-two inches.

I started to draw my flower templates, and my eyes blurred as I thought of the hours I’d spent making templates with my grandmother. “Be accurate,” she would say. “Templates are tools, and your work will only be as good as your tools.”

With my fabric folded and all three flower templates pinned into place, I cut out two of each size at once, for a total of six petals.

As I cut out thirty-six flower petals with her scissors, I had to smile. Her sewing scissors were sacred—the only time I ever saw her speechless was when she found my son using them to cut a toy car out of its cardboard package. Her face flushed from white to pink as he busted the car out of the package, running to her with a smile and a hug. He played with his much-loved car all afternoon while I took Grandma’s much-loved sewing scissors to be sharpened.

Getting a needle and thread from her sewing basket, I stacked up four petals for the base of the flower, then took four petals and folded them into a heart shape. I usually don’t use a thimble, but that day I slipped hers over my middle finger as I took one of her needles and thread and tacked down a heart-shaped petal to the petal shape underneath with a simple stitch. The thimble seemed warm as I took another petal and placed it on the opposite side from the first petal and tacked it down. I tacked down the third petal and then the fourth with an X stitch—perfected with handwork we did together while the summer days sped by. Digging into the bottom of the much-used sewing basket, I found the perfect button to stitch on top of the petals.

I stitched all three flowers onto the strips of fabric I had tied around the box. I patted the box. This would be the last time our family quilt traveled between my grandmother and me. A lifetime of memories, good and bad. Would the life of our family quilt continue?

I moved the gift to the table, embedded with three light grains followed by four dark grains on a diagonal, next to my great-grandmother’s framed recipe for apple crisp, with my quilted purse, and I went to get dressed for the hospital.

There's definitely a heartwarming story here, along with a heavy dose of crafting!
