4.0 out of 5 stars A short romantic magical story!, July 25, 2015
This review is from: Magick & Moonlight (Kindle Edition)
"Magick & Moonlight" by Marie Lavender is a great short story about a Wiccan named Jessie who gets caught in the forest skyclad (naked)by the sexy ex- cop, Ethan, while performing a ritual. He immediately thinks there is something alluring but dangerous about what she's doing so he insists that she put out the fire and takes her home. To hide her secret she puts a spell on him, but will it ruin what could be between them? Only time will tell.
I enjoyed this sweet, magical, romantic read. It's my first from this author but plan on reading more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great continuation to a great new series!, July 28, 2015

This review is from: A Little Magick (Magick Series Book 2) (Kindle Edition)
"A Little Magick" by Marie Lavender is about Rosie and her trip to Uncle Adam's house over the summer. What starts off as a playdate with a new friend, Tina, soon turns into Rosie getting bullied by a neighbor kid. As she thinks about how mean he is things start to happen and not all for the good. Will she be able to get it under control before someone gets hurt, or is it too late for that?
I really enjoyed reading this book from little Rosie's perspective; although I was not quite sure how young she was in this story I know she was pretty young. I liked the splash of romance between Uncle Adam and Selena, and also the moral lesson with bullying.

Cover Reveal

Good news! I think I finally have the cover down for A Little Magick, the upcoming children's fantasy which is also the sequel to Magick & Moonlight. I am excited about the Magick Series! Here is the cover:

Here is the first book, Magick & Moonlight, which is available now on Solstice Publishing and Amazon:

And, lest ye mourn the fact that there isn't another romance in the series, don't fret. Magick Sunrise is a romantic fantasy work in progress that I have planned for the third book. Here are my muses for that one:

It's all very exciting, isn't it? Here is a little teaser from A Little Magick to whet your appetite:

_____

Soon, her eyes began to get heavy and then she felt like she was floating.  Her eyelashes lifted and she groaned to see that Uncle Adam had picked her up and was carrying her.  “I’m sorry.  We can finish the show now.”
“It’s all right.  You’re too tired.  We can watch it another night.”
“But, I don’t want to.  I swear I can stay awake.”  Her lids began to drift closed once more, however.
“Hmm…why don’t you go to sleep now, Rosie?  All of this will still be here tomorrow.”
Uncle Adam’s low voice had the strangest effect on her.  Soon she felt the cool sheets of her bed beneath her and when the covers were drawn over her body, she thought this was what a cloud must feel like.
She drifted off, dreaming that she was a rocket, shooting straight through the stars and the wind blew through her hair, lifting it.
Sometime later, Rosanna came awake once more.  The room was pitch black, but she was not afraid of it.  She had never been afraid of darkness.  She tossed, trying to find a comfortable spot, hoping she would just go back to sleep, but she couldn’t.
Rosie turned onto her back and looked up at the ceiling.  As her eyes adjusted, she couldn’t detect much other than the shape of it. She wanted to open the window so she could breathe in the night air, one of her favorite pastimes.  But, she didn’t know how hard it would be to open. She thought of the crisp air she enjoyed when her family went camping, how they would all roast marshmallows over the fire and tell scary stories.  Before they retreated into their tent as a family, Mama and Daddy would drag her across their laps and ask her what shapes she could see.  She thought of the array of stars blessing the night sky, high above the treetops.  It was a nice memory.

She noticed vaguely that a light had come on, a soft one like the nightlight Mama and Daddy had in her room even though she told them she wasn’t scared.  Then suddenly, she realized it wasn’t a light causing her to see.
She looked down at her hands and they glowed a bright blue.  “Something is wrong,” she whispered.  Her breath caught in her throat and she scrambled out of bed.  When she landed on her feet, her blue pajamas were glowing too.  She looked down at her chest and realized it was in her skin.  She opened her mouth and screamed.  Then she saw that the dark room was covered in a multitude of stars like the night sky at home or like Uncle Adam’s theater.  It was beautiful, but strange.  Why was this happening?  Was this the magick Mama did?  Could she do it too?
The glow was still under her skin though, and it frightened her.  Her breaths became labored.
            “Rosie!”
“Uncle Adam!” she cried as the door flew open and she saw him bare-chested and in a pair of dark pajama pants.
“Are you okay?” he asked, then stopped short when he looked around. “What the…”  His mouth dropped open when he saw the stars dotting the room.
“It’s in my skin!” she cried.
His gaze swung back to her and his eyes widened when he took her in.  He wrapped her in his arms.  “Okay…ah, okay.  We’ll figure this out.”

I have a couple more beta reads and then A Little Magick should be available to the public. Yay! :)

Two great reviews!

I love getting those Authorgraph emails that inform me of new reviews! Case in point, I found the email today and had to check out these awesome five star reviews, one for Magick & Moonlight and one for Upon Your Honor.  Thank you, Romance Gal! What a treat to find. You can see the reviews below:

5.0 out of 5 stars Went straight to my heart!, December 2, 2014

This review is from: Magick & Moonlight (Kindle Edition)
Okay, I admit I'm a big fan of Marie Lavender's romances. Her novella, Magick & Moonlight, proved no exception: It went straight to my heart! That said, I couldn't help wishing that the story were longer. I wanted to explore the hero and heroine in more detail. Ethan is a complex individual with an open mind; a wounded spirit who needs time to heal. Jessie is just coming into her own as a practicing Wiccan. She's sweet, shy, and a bit unsure of herself. Marie combined all the right ingredients to tell an enjoyable story about learning to trust and finding true love. This is a good one to cuddle up with for an hour or two.

5.0 out of 5 stars A shipboard romance with lots of adventure..., December 2, 2014
By
This review is from: Upon Your Honor (Kindle Edition)
Having read Upon Your Return, I couldn't wait to read the sequel...and lucky for me, I didn't have to! The author gifted me the book in exchange for an honest review. Well, I enjoyed Upon Your Honor every bit as much as the first novel in the series. Grant and Fara Hill's son, Gabriel, has grown into a handsome, decent young man--not unlike his charming father. It was fun to reconnect with the "mature Grant" and to travel the seas with Gabriel and Chloe, the hero and heroine in this story. If you're looking for a shipboard romance with lots of adventure, you'll fall in love with Upon Your Honor!

Can a Wiccan find true Love? Jessie and Ethan come across each other at what appears to be the right time in their lives, but not by his free will. She needs him and he needs her, and together they find each other. It's a delightful romance about two people who are so different from each other. Opposites attract, or do they? Fun, sweet, exciting, and joyful make up this feel-good romance. So worth reading!

Book Review: Magick and Moonlight by Marie Lavender

Title: Magick and Moonlight
Author: Marie Lavender
Publication Date: March 2, 2014
Publisher: Solstice Shadows
Genre: Paranormal/Fantasy Romance

Blurb:

Messing with free will is always a bad idea...

Ethan Hamilton moves to a lazy little town in Oregon, hoping to escape his demons. But instead he discovers a woman dancing nude in the moonlight. This woman who claims she is a witch dazzles him with her sensual presence. He thinks she's crazy, but what if she's not?

Jessie Anderson has been taught that her kind hides who they really are. And she has a problem on her hands. Someone knows her secret and she has to do all she can to protect herself. What other choice does she have? Jessie casts a love spell on a good man, a man with whom she can't fight her attraction. The spell doesn't work quite as planned -- she ends up falling for Ethan.

To top it off, Ethan's treatment of her, his "love", is so addictive. Deep down, she knows the spell will wear off, and yet his feelings seem genuine. It's just a spell...right?

Kayla's Thoughts:

I can definitely appreciate any book that has an element of witchcraft and spellcasting in it. Having red hair, I have always kind of identified with that sort of world. So at hearing that this particular novella had this aspect of the paranormal in it, and the fact that it was about a love spell where the caster falls in love with the castee, I was intrigued and quite excited to see what was going to happen.

Now, being that this is a novella, I knew that it was going to be short. But I actually did not expect for it to be so short. I loved the story, the premise, the characters, but I felt the story went too fast to actually affect me in any way. I did feel a small connection after finishing the story, and I loved the ending, but I would have liked there to be a bit more development throughout the story. I would have liked some more intimate connections between the two main characters. You know, scenes where they just talk and tell each other their lives and just get to know each other better. I also would have loved more of Ethan's point of view. For example, when we first meet him, he has already arrived in town and rented a cabin. I would have loved the first chapter to be him driving into this strange new town and maybe having the image of what made him run in the first place haunting him.

I wanted more time to experience their relationship while Ethan was under the spell. It just seemed like at one moment he was under, and the next he wasn't. I wanted to see her through his eyes, and I wanted there to be moments where a small thought in his mind made him question occasionally if what they had was real. And then I kind of wanted him to brush it away until finally something or someone jolts his memory and gets him out of his trance.

I just would have definitely loved more. This story has such potential to go from being a mere novella to a full-blown novel. There are so many situations that could occur and so many more people to introduce. I want to know so much more about the town itself. I want to really be grabbed emotionally by the confusing state of the main characters' relationship. I want to see the townspeople's reactions to the sudden relationship as well.

Verdict:

I think this is a very unique storyline, and I do believe it is a good read. But, as I said before, I really wish there was more.

Character Days: Jessie Anderson from Magick & Moonlight

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IRKN5P2
Tell me a little about yourself and the world you live in.

I live in a Victorian cottage in Yachats, Oregon.  It is a pretty small town where everyone is involved in everyone else’s business.
Do you like your job?

Yes, I love it.  I run a gift and candle shop in town.  I love being my own boss.
Tell us about your single most important memory.  What was it and how does it affect you now?

When I was young and very eager to do spells, my grandmother would ground me with other practices first.  She taught me to love gardening.  She said, “First we must love and respect nature in all its forms.  Only then can you understand who you are.”  Since then, I have loved nature.  I love going for walks in the forest and I especially love the drastic weather changes.  It is like the God and Goddess are trying to tell us something.
What type of person are you?  Are you a hero or do you shy away from conflict?

No, I don’t shy away from conflict.  I’m not a fan of it, but I will stand up for what I believe in.  I have always detested crimes against nature and when I was a teenager, I was an activist.  However, there are forces that are beyond our control as well.  It is not uncommon to have forest fires in Oregon and I really hate to see such destruction to our beautiful trees.
Do you have any hobbies, any special talents?

I make my own candles and use them in my shop.  I also garden as I mentioned before.  I do spells to center myself.
And in that line, what would be your ideal day?

My ideal day would be to close up shop and go on a walk.  I love walking.  After a simple lunch, I might plan for an evening ritual in the forest.  I always celebrate the full moon.
Do you have anyone close to you, any family or friends of interest?

I wish I still did.  My family is gone now and though I had a couple of friends in college, we drifted apart after my grandmother’s death and when I returned to Yachats.  I do know people in town, but I wouldn’t say they are friends exactly.  Ethan is probably the closest thing to a friend I have had in awhile.
What is your most prized possession?

My house.  It has always been home.  It was my grandmother’s house, but I can’t imagine not living there.
What initially spurred your actions in this story.  Obviously it had to start somewhere for you, give us an idea of where that starting point is and where it all started.

Well, a man caught me practicing in the moonlight.  I shouldn’t have told him what I did, but I had to do something to fix my mistake.
How do you envision your future?

I am a simple girl.  I just want to live my life in peace.  Perhaps at some point, I can find someone who accepts who I am, but I am in no hurry.
Tell us where we can read more about you?

You can read more about me in Magick & Moonlight.

Surprise Interview on James McAllister's Blog!

My Interview of Marie Lavender

87d18925e5cd0ad8986ca4.L._V381845627_SY470_

Hello, Marie. Thank you for joining us. Please tell us a little about your background: where are you from, where you live now, your family, if you have or did have a career other than writing.

I came from a small town in Indiana. I still live in Indiana, but I do plan to move to California someday. I live with my family and three cats. Writing has pretty much always been my main job, though in the past I took side jobs as a waitress, hostess and call center agent. Currently, in my other life, I am the executive vice president of a medical devices startup.

Do you have any hobbies, interests, or activities that you enjoy?

I love writing, of course, but I also do a lot of reading and I love shopping when I can afford it. I also like to try new restaurants. I am adventurous with food. I enjoy cooking at home as well, and I spend a lot of time making up recipes.

If you were beginning your writing career today, what would you do differently?

In some ways, I wouldn’t change it because what I did got me here. But, I might try to focus more on projects instead of flounder from one story to another, which is what I did when I was younger. Although, if I had a deadline, I always had to the uncanny ability to finish something when it was necessary. I am more organized these days.

Did you have a mentor, someone who helped you through the process?

I wouldn’t say I had a specific mentor. I had several Creative Writing teachers and professors that inspired me. I also used my favorite authors as inspiration.

What advice would you give new authors?

For one, never give up. That persistence or bullheadedness will save you in a number of situations. If it seems like you’ve failed at something, pick yourself up and start again. We never truly fail; we are just delayed for a time. And secondly, start promoting yourself as a writer or author early on, even before you’ve published. Gain blog followers. Just try to gain a following of people who like to hear what you have to say. Word of mouth is the best marketing tool around.

How do you form the story lines for your writing?

Ideas just come to me at any time. There is no recipe for it. When I am ready to focus on it, I will sit down and come up with a basic outline. Later, I come up with a very detailed one. But, in between all of this, scenes can come to me in any order.

How do you research your books?

I write until I get stuck. If I know I need to look up information, I stop and do that. At some point, I have to come up with a detailed research document filled with links and notes on whatever topic I’m covering. This helps because I can refer back to it when I need to.

Out of the books you’ve written, do you have a favorite, or one that stands out in your mind?

There are two. Upon Your Return will always be my baby because it was my first historical romance. Fara and Grant will always have a special place in my heart. I was also affected by the characters in A Touch of Dawn. Caitlyn and Jack were very special people who deserved so much to be happy, and I was glad to step back from the writing of it and realize their story was told the best way it could have been.

When writing a series, do you map out the entire story of the series at the beginning?

Truthfully, I didn’t know there would be sequels to Upon Your Return until about two years ago. It wasn’t planned at all. One day, the idea came to me. I saw a scene for the second book in my head. A few months later, I started thinking about the third book. I would say that I have a basic idea of how they will play out, but the good stuff, the core of the story, doesn’t come out until you’re working on it. I didn’t know the motivation of the heroine for Upon Your Honor until well into the writing of it. Now, I have other works in progress where sequels are involved and it is the same. I have a basic idea for them, but I am just as surprised as the reader to find out what happens.

Tell us about your latest book.

My latest release is Magick & Moonlight. It is a short paranormal romance about two characters who have their own secrets and the lengths they go to in order to figure out what they want in life.

What did writing this book teach you?

Oh, I learned a lot about Wicca. I never have judged people for their beliefs, but it certainly does make me respect the religion more. And I have other magickal books planned for the future.

How can readers learn about your new projects?

There is a “projects and writing” section on my website where readers can see my temporary titles and plans for books and series. I usually include a sample of a work in progress. http://marielavender.webs.com/projectsandwritingreviews.htm

Where can readers find your writing?

Links to all of my books can be found on the homepage of my website. http://marielavender.webs.com/

Is there anything you would like to leave our readers with?

Surprise Review for M&M on Big Al's Books and Pals

Okay, I had to post this.  First of all, I started laughing right away when I read this part:

"As a heads up I would like to warn others not to leave a personal item behind when you offer to drive the crazy naked woman home from the middle of the woods.) I am pretty sure Jessie did not walk out into the woods naked but no effort to pick up her clothes was taken, and from that point on my belief was shaken enough to not buy into the story as much as I wanted to."

I am not one to usually comment on reviews other than to thank the reviewer, but with this one, I feel I must say something to readers.  Jessie really did not leave her clothes behind.  She left her cauldron, for sure, but no articles of clothing.  You may ask how she got there naked.  Well, she does elude to it in the story.  In any case, here is the full review and I have to thank the reviewer for reading the book.  Thanks!

Appraisal:

I picked up this novella on a whim for a quick read. Jessie, a practicing Wiccan, runs a small candle and gift shop in Yachats, Oregon. Ethan Hamilton, an ex-cop, has recently relocated to the area to escape a past he would rather forget. I thought the premise had a lot of promise, although somewhere along the line the story fell flat for me.

When Ethan comes across Jessie dancing naked in the woods around a cauldron under the full moon, Jessie is afraid her secret will be exposed. Ethan offers to drive the crazy naked woman home wrapping his coat around her. (As a heads up I would like to warn others not to leave a personal item behind when you offer to drive the crazy naked woman home from the middle of the woods.) I am pretty sure Jessie did not walk out into the woods naked but no effort to pick up her clothes was taken, and from that point on my belief was shaken enough to not buy into the story as much as I wanted to. Once she is home Jessie begins to fret about being identified as a witch and casts a love spell on Ethan to protect herself from exposure.

The only fantasy element was the casting of the love spell, which Jessie knew would come back in a bad way. Otherwise, the story is about the journey of two souls who needed to find each other. Ethan, a hard-nosed cop, who refused to believe in magic and Jessie, an insecure Wiccan, who was raised with magic all around her. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Perhaps you should take the risk and give it a try.

FYI:

Some sexual situations that are not too graphic.

Lavender didn’t waste any time getting to the heart of the story. Although it seemed to be repetitive in some areas, it was well written. I was surprised at how well written the characters are, considering in most short stories they are what they are, no growth. This is definitely worth the 99 pennies! I look forward to more of Lavender's work.

Moonlight and Magick by Marie Lavender

Excerpts from MAGICK & MOONLIGHT on Seasons on Love

Magick and Moonlight – Excerpts

A great weekend read…excerpts from Magick and Moonlight by Marie Lavender. Enjoy!

Excerpt 1

Moonlight and Magick by Marie LavenderHe cleared his throat.  “Is there a reason I found you naked out there?  I mean, you lost your clothes somehow, right?”
The secret smile she gave him made his throat feel dry.  “Do you want me to lie?”
“Of course not.”
“The ritual was best practiced in the nude.  Skyclad rituals are very common, you know.  The Goddess tells us, ‘You shall be free from all slavery, and as a sign that you be truly free, you shall be naked in your rights.’”
He lifted a brow.  “Even if that were the case, you didn’t walk there naked, did you?”
“Didn’t I?”
Maybe she was crazy after all.
“I didn’t walk at all.”
He thought she might be saying that she was transported by magic.  Yep, she was batty as hell.  He was so not touching that one.  He cleared his throat again.
A sharp cry startled him and instinctively, he reached forward and grabbed her when she started to fall.  Unfortunately, she ended up right in his arms.
Or maybe it was fortunate after all.  With her luscious lips so close, he could almost taste her.  And her scent…dear God, she was intoxicating, like a mixture of night air and jasmine.  “You all right?” he managed.
She nodded.  “My foot caught on a rock, I think.”
“Is it bleeding?”
“My foot or the rock?”  Her cheek dimpled.
He laughed.  “Your foot, of course.”
“No, I don’t think so.  It’s all right.”
“Good.”  He realized his mistake immediately.  Some strange instinct caused him to keep her close.  Stepping back would be a crime and she was seductive.  Knowing she was naked underneath his coat didn’t help anything.  She was way too accessible.  Heedless of the costs, he plunged a hand into the soft waves of her dark hair and lowered his mouth to hers.
She tasted like wine, potent and sweet.  He explored her mouth slowly, allowing her the chance to pull away or slap him.  He knew he’d deserve it.  He’d never stolen a kiss before, and he couldn’t think why he’d done it now.  But, she tasted delicious.  And her body felt so good against his.  He groaned and drew her closer.  When she moaned in return, he kissed her deeply and moved a hand down her back.  His hands wanted to roam further, but he held himself in check.  If he was a real gentleman, he’d pull away now.  Reluctantly, he did.
He drew back and tried to get his libido back under control.  “Ah…sorry.  I wasn’t thinking.”  He swept a hand through his hair.
He thought she looked just as shaken.  But she smiled a little.  “It’s okay.  No harm done, right?”
“Right.”

Excerpt 2

When his truck was gone, she released a long sigh.  She also felt strangely bereft, though she had no idea why.  She shrugged it off.  Maybe she was simply tired.  It had been an eventful night.
She removed the coat and lifted it to her nose without thinking.  It carried his scent, of cologne and something very male.  It made her feel warm.  She carefully laid the coat on a table, then moved upstairs to locate something to wear.  At the closet, she paused.
She thought of Ethan Hamilton.  He had only been wearing jeans, a tee shirt and hiking boots.  He had looked really good though.  Ethan wore his hair long on top in dark brown layers.  His blue eyes were very compelling.  The moonlight had caught the color so perfectly, she had wanted to drown in his gaze.  He was tall and muscular, built very well.  And dear Goddess, his kiss was really something.  She had never felt like she had when he’d kissed her.  There was such passion, such power in his embrace.  She had nearly lost herself in the moment.
But, why had she told him what she was doing out there?  That was so stupid.  She wondered if she’d momentarily lost her mind.  The man made her want to be completely honest.  And that was just crazy.  Sure, he was a cop, or a former cop – she wasn’t sure – but, that didn’t mean she had to give him full disclosure.
She had told him her secret.  The implications really hit her then.  She could be found out.  What if he told someone?  Her grandmother had told her to be careful for a reason.  Her business might suffer because of it.  What if something worse happened?  What if they ran her out of town?  Or institutionalized her?  Panic could make people crazy.
This wasn’t good at all.
