INTRODUCING OUR NEXT AUTHOR -
MARIE LAVENDER
PUBLISHED AUTHOR OF SEVENTEEN BOOKS (TO DATE) AND COUNTING
1 Please tell us a
little about your background.
A: I come from a small town in
the Midwest. It was just my parents and
three kids. I was the youngest.
2 You are an
established author. Have you always
wanted to write or when did you discover this desire?
A: Yes, it seems like I always
wanted to write. Pretty much from the
time I was nine years old, I wanted to be an author.
3 As a teenager,
was there anything else you had considered as a career?
A: At
one point, I considered
owning my own bookstore because I loved books so much. I also thought
about being a singer. I was in choir practically all of my life and
I considered singing professionally, but I was really too shy at the
time for
it.
4 How old were you
when you discovered the writer in you?
A: Nine years old.
5 What triggered
your desire to write?
A: I wish I knew what started
it. It just seemed like I always had an
active imagination. When other kids were
playing outside, I had whole scenes and stories in my head. Not that I didn’t have a couple of friends
too. I was just a little more of an
introvert.
A: I have published seventeen books.
7 Who and/or what
inspires you?
A: I
write romance so I am
inspired by many things, mostly true love.
Reading about it or seeing it in films is inspiring to me. I prefer to
see it in real life though. When I see two people who are simply made
for
each other in life, that is very inspiring.
My fiancé also inspires me every day, whether it is his encouragement of
me or his own creative ambitions. I am
also inspired any time I can tell how much he loves me. What is more
inspiring to a romance writer
than having her own love story?
8 You are
successfully self-published. Did you
consider going through any of the
mainstream publishing houses first?
A: Of
course I did. And I had certainly planned to all
along. But, I watched how the
self-publishing craze took on a life of its own and it made me curious.
I thought I’d try it myself. I started out with my literary fiction,
knowing it was hard to find a market for short stories, and compiled
them into
anthologies. After that, I published
various books, mostly contemporary romance, romantic suspense,
paranormal
romance and mysteries.
9 ‘Upon Your
Return’ is published through
traditional publishing. How did that
happen, when your other titles were self-published?
A: I really always planned to
publish 'Upon Your Return' traditionally. It was a very long
project for me, a nearly ten year project.
But, I worked hard and got it where I wanted it before I started sending
queries to agents and publishers.
10 The cover of ‘Upon
Your Return’ is beautiful. Who
designed that?
A: Kayden McLeod was the cover
artist.
11 How have you
proceeding with your marketing?
A: I have done what I can. My marketing budget has been pretty limited
so I have mainly used Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. I also try to have listings of my books
wherever I can. And I have a few book
cover ads as well.
12 You enjoy
reading. Do you have any favourite
authors?
A: Definitely. Some of my favourites are Catherine Coulter, Nora Roberts, J.R. Ward, P.C. Cast and Kerrelyn Sparks.
13 What other
hobbies do you have?
A: Besides reading and
writing? Hmm. Well, I love music so I spend a lot of time
listening to different types of music.
Sometimes I use music to set the mood for my writing. And, of course, I sing along because for the
moment, I still have the ability to sing.
LOL. I also have some TV shows I
follow. And I see films when I can.
14 Have you ever
read any titles more than once?
A: Of course. I do that now and then, revisit old titles to
see if they are still just as good as the first time I read them.
14 What is your
favourite genre?
A: Romance is my
favourite. I have branched out and tried
other types of books, but romance is my favourite. I enjoy reading paranormal romance,
contemporary and historical romance.
16 Have you had much
to do with the media and interviews? How
did you start that – please tell us all about it.
A: I have never been on
widespread media channels, but I have done interviews. In August of 2012, 'Upon Your Return' was accepted by Solstice Publishing. After that, I started to learn more about how
to market my books. I realized blogging
was a big thing, and so were interviews.
My first online interview was with RC Bonitz on his site. It posted in March of 2013, about a month
after 'Upon Your Return' was
released. http://rcbonitz.com/2013/03/20/483/ From that
point on, I did everything I could to find bloggers that might interview me or
spotlight my book. I also did guest
articles. But, I gave back too. I launched my own blog that offered author
interviews, guest posts and poetry spotlights.
You can subscribe or join the blog here. http://marielavender.blogspot.com/ Writing in the
Modern Age has really taken on a life of its own. It’s been such a joy working with a bunch of
different writers.
17 Whether a victim
or not, how do you feel about bullying?
A: Of course, I don’t condone
it. No one should be put down or shamed
for being different. They shouldn’t be
treated unfairly for any reason. I’m not
sure how we can enforce it, but if I had children, I would want to protect
them.
18 Do you feel the
governments and schools are doing enough to try to control or stop this act?
A: There is clearly a public
outcry against it. But, I don’t know if
much is being done about it. I see some
changes, but I think it will be awhile before we see enough done to stop it
altogether.
19 What is next in
the pipeline for Marie Lavender?
A: Well, I just released a new book - 'Leather and Lace'. It is a romantic suspense and was published under my pen name Erica Sutherhome.
I also plan to have an anthology out soon. I am polishing the sequel to 'Upon Your Return' right now. I am also working on another romantic suspense with
a writing partner. Additionally, I plan to re-release all my old titles under one name. So, there’s quite a
bit on my plate. LOL.
20 Do you have a
message you would like to impart to the world?

SPECIAL GUEST AUTHOR MARIE LAVENDER
I would like to thank Marie Lavender for letting me interview her and share here on Little Red's Book Reviews.
I would love to have pictures of your books I know you write different genre's. The one I know about is Upon Your Return. I would also like to know about you.
Would like the blurb to Upon Your Return? Also an author's picture.
Blurb:
Fara Bellamont has been back in society for a year after leaving Cluny Abbey, where her uncle sent her long ago. When he chooses a suitor for her for marriage, she fears that she will be forced to marry a stranger and live a miserable life. But, Fara finds herself thrust into an adventure of a lifetime when unforeseen circumstances cause her to place her trust in a strange man for protection. His intervention not only saves her, but puts her in an even more compromising position. Grant Hill, a trading captain, is enchanted by the young heiress not only because of her beauty, but because she is hardly conventional. Underneath her ladylike exterior lies a tigress. Grant cannot help but offer his protection as she is in need and he is far from immune from her charms. Fara just never bargained on the passion that she feels for Grant Hill. As events unfold, she must decide whether her desires and the dictates of her heart should trump the rules of society…
Tell me a little about yourself!
I have been writing stories since I was nine years old. I published a couple of stories in a university publication in 2005, but didn’t officially publish a book until 2010. Since then, I have published seventeen books in the various genres of literary fiction, mystery and romance. I mainly write romance novels. I have written contemporary romance, paranormal romance, romantic suspense and historical romance.
What interested you that you got into writing?
I’m not really sure what started it other than my wild imagination. I had lots of stories going through my head as a child, and eventually I decided to write them down. I always loved reading. I used to sneak and read with a small light at bedtime when I was really supposed to be asleep. So I suppose it was a combination of imagination and a great love of books that began this journey.
I see that you write different genres. What is your favorite genre to write?
Wow. Hard question there. I prefer to write romance. As for subgenres of romance, it is hard for me to decide between contemporary and historical romance, though I have always loved the times when men were still gentlemen and women were ladies. There is something very appealing about the Regency era for me. In fact, I wouldn’t mind traveling back in time to experience it.
What is your favorite to read and did that lead you into writing more of that genre?
My current obsession is paranormal romance. I have loads of vampire books stacked up on my floor. I have a few vampire stories in progress, but they are not ready yet. I also love witch stories so I have a few of those. In fact, I just got a contract for a paranormal romance recently. That should be out next year hopefully. It is titled “Magick & Moonlight”.
How many books have you written?
As of this moment, I have written 17 books.
Which one is your favorite? Why?
Oh, you had to ask me that! LOL. Right now, my favorite is Leather and Lace. It was recently released under Erica Sutherhome. It is a very hot romantic suspense about a cop who stumbles across a stripper at a crime scenes and he pursues her. He senses she is in trouble, but she won’t tell him the truth. So, what is a man to do but get involved with her to figure out what’s going on?
Do you have different pen names? Are the different cause they are different genre's? What made you choose the pen names you picked?
Yes, I have used a few pen names. My first three books were literary fiction/poetry so I used my real name. When I released my next book, a romantic mystery, I decided to use a pen name. Erica Sutherhome was born. I released several after that under the same pen name. I did a paranormal thriller at some point under Kathryn Layne in the hopes of separating my paranormal books from the rest. I went back to Erica Sutherhome for the next few books. When Upon Your Return was released, I used Marie Lavender because it was a historical romance. And, of course, I used Erica Sutherhome again recently with Leather and Lace. The truth is that I have grown tired of using so many names, however, and I have decided to stick with Marie Lavender from now on. It is also a name that means a lot to me as it is a family name. In this vein, I will re-release all of my previous books under that name. My first three books will be released soon as an anthology titled Miss Lavender’s Anthology of Ramblings.
When writing how do you come up with the plot? Do you plan the book out as far as which directions things go or is it just natural go with the flow sort of thing?
I think I use both techniques. When I am just starting an idea, it is very casual. I have a general idea of the plot, but I don’t know all of the angles yet. When I really focus on something, that’s when all of the interesting stuff happens. I get more organized and do more planning. But, the scenes also seem to flow naturally.
Is there a way you come up with the characters name?
I have always been pretty bad with coming up with new names. Sometimes I will use a name and substitute something else later. With Upon Your Return and Leather and Lace, I already knew what the names of the main characters would be ahead of time. Occasionally, I still struggle with ideas and it will be ‘he or she’ until I can come up with something better. I also try to fit the character with a name that sounds right. For minor characters, I don’t worry too much about it unless location or history depends on it.
What makes you choose the location the book takes place? Do they have significant meaning to you?
I think location is pretty important. Readers need those details to really see a place. I did a lot of research for Upon Your Return to try to tie it down to specific locations. I did the same for Leather and Lace. It was set in Boston so I had to put my thinking hat on. The crime occurred in Beacon Hill so I had to set everything close to it. I also wanted it to be realistic so I used actual places and went from there.
Is Upon Your Return your only Historical Romance? If so are you going to write more Historical Romance books?
No. It’s my only published one right now, but I have plans for many others. I have a whole list of historical romances in the works on my website. Upon Your Return is book one of the Heiresses in Love series, which is actually a trilogy. Upon Your Honor is the second book. I am polishing the manuscript right now to send to my publisher. As aforementioned, I have a lot of historical romances planned. Some are Regency, some western, and some are even paranormal in nature.
Would love to have your author links and buy links if possible if not I can look them up. Also if you have Goodreads that link as well.

A MISPLACED LIFE Excerpt - Chapter 9 on Eat Sleep Write

A Misplaced Life - Chapter 9 by Kathryn Layne
I tried to appear several times the next day. But, each time I did, the detective seemed
distracted. I thought it might be
me. Perhaps I could no longer appear on
a whim. Maybe I’d drained that energy
away in my time in another realm. I
couldn’t be sure. So I tried his
partner. I followed Jake to the men’s
room and just when he reached for his zipper as he stood before the urinal, I
concentrated. I knew my plan had
succeeded when the man glanced over, jumped and exclaimed, “Jesus Christ!”
Boy, did I high-tail it out of there. Though I was mildly concerned that I’d done
some permanent damage to him, at least I knew I could still appear as a spirit
to others if I desired.
The problem was Sam. I entertained the idea that it had more to do
with a person’s belief system that anything.
If a man was open-minded and he believed in the unexplained, then he
would see more. If, however, an
individual was far too practical, much to the point of excluding things that
might be deemed as inexplicable, then he would go on his merry way, oblivious
to the wonders of the universe.
Sam was a tough nut to crack. I briefly wondered if Julie might have some
influence on him, but there was no time.
She was hardly in a rush to move forward with him and a part of me
couldn’t blame her.
Trent was getting too close to Julie though. She was in danger and I was not corporeal
enough to lend a hand. I needed to find
a way to get Sam on the right trail. If
he suspected Trent, he would dig deeper.
And he might discover something.
I was eerily certain that I was not Trent’s first. Rarely did psychopaths get created from
nothing. It was likely he had done it
before, or many times. And he was so
sure he wouldn’t get caught. His
arrogance was obvious. I had to defeat
him somehow. And I had one more trick up
my sleeve.
I trailed Sam for the rest of the day and followed him
home. When he had taken a shower,
ordered a pizza and downed a beer, I pounced.
I pulled every trick in the book.
I rattled doors and windows, opened and closed cabinets and moved
objects. I got no response, however,
just an eyebrow and then he went right back to watching a game on TV.
I groaned, frustrated.
How could Julie stand him? The
man was infuriating. I stepped over to
his desk and took the case file and pushed it off onto the floor. Papers and photos popped out of the
folder. The picture my parents gave to
the police gave me some pause.
I tried hard, but I could no longer remember the day it
was taken. It seemed like a lifetime
ago. All I could remember was my
parents, Julie and this man across the room.
And Trent, of course.
Tears started in my eyes. I had lost my memories. I tried to picture my house, but there was nothing. I tried to remember what I was wearing the
night of my death, but it didn’t seem to matter. I gasped.
“What’s wrong with me?”
When I looked up, I saw an odd shadow flash briefly in
front of the window across the room and then it slowly faded. Curious, I followed the odd shape to the
door.
I somehow ended up in the corridor of the apartment
building. I followed the abnormal
shape. It was a bright flash, nearly the
color of white, then gray, then it would vanish. I felt compelled to find out what it
was. I followed the object to the
stairwell, where a girl, probably about seventeen, stood leaning against the
wall. She was wearing white pants, a
pale blue shirt and she had hooked her thumbs in her belt loops. For a moment, her eyes met mine and then
slowly shifted away.
I knew then that she could see me. I moved towards her. “Who are you?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“I’d like to know.”
“My name is Rebecca.”
I took a deep breath.
“Are you…are you like me?”
She shrugged.
“That depends on your definition.”
The girl was starting to grate on my nerves. “Are you following me?”
She dismissed my words with a wave of her hand. “You waste your time with the living.”
I felt the burn suddenly in my chest. It was like heartache. “They’re all I have.”
“That’s not true.
There are whole worlds ahead of you if you just open your eyes.”
“My eyes are open.
And I haven’t seen anyone like me until now.”
“I never said I was like you.”
“Then who are you?”
I sighed. “What are you?” I emphasized.
She shook her head.
“I came to give you a chance to move on.”
“How?”
“All you have to do is take my hand and come with
me. I can take you to another place,
where the world of the living will be forgotten.”
I gasped. “I
don’t want to forget! He has to pay for
what he did to me!”
She frowned.
“Vengeance is not the way.”
“I want justice.”
“And over there, all of that will seem insignificant.”
“I don’t want to forget,” I whispered. “Why am I forgetting?”
“You waver between the two worlds. You must choose a side or be lost forever.”
“I won’t forget.
They still need me.”
“Do they? They’re
learning to move on. Perhaps you should
too.”
“I can’t. He’ll
get away with it. I can’t let that
happen.”
“Very well.
You’ve made your choice then. I
can’t promise you’ll have another chance, Alexa. The harder you cling to the living, the
harder it will be to move on if the time comes to make that choice again.”
“I know.”
The girl nodded and started to fade. I reached out to grab at her. “Rebecca?”
She wavered for a moment. “Yes?”
“I am relieved that I’m not the only one here.”
She frowned. “You
are not. Others are struggling too. If you open your eyes, you can see them. Part of what is holding you here is blinding
you. Your revenge has clouded your
judgment. But, if you let yourself, you
will see them. They must make a choice
as you have today. I wish you well,
Alexa Hamilton.”
“Thank you.”
And then she vanished.
I stood in the stairwell for a long time, alone with my
thoughts, before I started back up the stairs, determined more than ever to
convince Sam that I was real and that it was essential to find the proof to
finally put Trent away.
****
I appeared in his apartment, right in front of the
television. It took no effort this
time.
Sam’s gaze widened and he blinked. I had to give him kudos for his composure,
but he stood up so fast his beer can spilled to the floor. That would make an interesting mess. “Holy-“
“Don’t panic,” I began.
“I was desperate. I’m afraid
he’ll go after Julie.”
He frowned. “What
in the hell are you talking about?” Then
he groaned. “I can’t believe this. I’ve completely lost my mind,” he muttered,
sweeping a hand through his hair. “Too
many beers, that’s what it is.”
“You’re not crazy.
Or drunk. It’s me. Alexa Hamilton.”
“I know who you are,” he spat out.
I nodded. “Of
course you do. I imagine you know more
than you want to by now.” I
grimaced. “Well, don’t believe
everything you hear.”
He frowned. “What
do you want?”
“You have to stop him.”
“Who?”
“My killer.”
He released a shaky breath. “I know.
And I will. I never walk away
from a case.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. “Well, that’s good. But, you’ve overlooked something. He’s getting away with it. And he’s going after Julie.”
He frowned.
“Why?”
I shook my head. “She
knows too much or at least he thinks she does.”
I sighed. “You’ve got to protect
her.”
Sam nodded. “I
will. I promise.”
The burn in my chest eased a little. “Thank you.”
The room grew silent, almost eerie. Sam cleared his throat. “You’re not going to tell me who it is, are
you?”
I shook my head.
“I can’t. There’s no evidence at
the moment. He’s good. He knows the system,” I added, hoping that
the hint would be enough.
Then a hard pain pierced through me suddenly and I
staggered. I heard Sam call my name
distantly just as I was transported.
