Spotlight: K.C. Sprayberry Visits to Talk About YA Fiction Book, THE LIE!

Today, fellow author K.C. Sprayberry is stopping by to talk about her latest book!

Hello! Thank you for having me here. 

 

My pleasure, of course! So, let me ask a few questions since you're here...

All right.

 

Can you tell us a little about your latest book? When did it come out and where can we get it?  

 

The Lie asks only one question—what is the worst lie you’ve ever told yourself? For Amy, that answer doesn’t come until it’s too late. Her whole life is turned upside down for a year, reliving a prank she became involved with because of her bestie. Bryce, her two years younger brother, discovers that his sister is a strong woman and that he can’t always be her rescuer.

The Lie has been on pre-order on Amazon since February 19th and became available on March 4th.

So, what inspired you to write your book? How did you get into writing young adult fiction?

 

My editor and I were kicking around ideas, talking about how a lie is like ripples in a pond—they spread farther and farther from the original point where the water was disturbed and have an effect on everything around them. The same thing happens with a lie, and those ripples can have devastating effects on so many people.

Someone told me one time that I had to make a choice about which genre I would write in. At the time, most of the stories in my head were for teens, so I picked young adult. That didn’t last long though and today, I’m a multi-genre author with novels and short stories for many genres—young adult coming of age, paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, westerns, and soon, military fiction. For me, the characters drive the story—the setting, the genre, what happens, even the outcome. And if I don’t get it right, they will wake me out of a sound sleep to work until I do.

So, tell us...what, do you feel, sets your book apart from other books in the genre?

 

The Lie is about a hardcore subject, not just telling lies but also toxic friends and teens as psychopaths. No punches are pulled in this book. The reader will feel as if they are part of the tragedy Amy and Bryce live through, their ups and downs, a normal life of a teenage girl preparing for college only to have all her dreams in danger of being lost. Or a teenage boy who desperately wants to protect his older sister, only to realize he can’t always be there for her. This is about family, how they’re not always perfect, nor do they always make the right decisions. But it’s also about burgeoning love and how even in the toughest times, your family will come through for you.

Amy:

The sun is peeping over the mountains all around us. The members of the Landry High School Band fill in the last of the holes where we placed our planned revenge to go off tonight. None of us has had any sleep since we woke up yesterday, yet we’re charged up and ready for the rest of today and well into tonight.

“Where are your friends?” I ask.

Jane Preston, my bestie, the true mastermind of this prank, smirks at me.

Her light brown hair flies around her face in the early morning breeze. She swipes a few strands away from her pinched mouth and grimaces. Jane is always angry, always ready to take revenge for what she sees as a slight against her. Her slender body hunches forward, what she calls a protection method against all of her enemies. A lot of people don’t like her. I’m her only real friend. That’s because I feel sorry for her. Honesty turned on… a trait I value not only in myself but everyone close to me… I sometimes wish that Jane will stop being so weird and mean, and learn to be part of the group.

And she won’t let me alone whenever I try to get away from her. Jane would make more friends if she tried a little harder. It’s like she enjoys scaring people, so they don’t get close to her. But she’s always complaining about how everyone hates her.

Bryce: 

I hear Amy coming home. She doesn’t know that I’ve been awake all night, waiting on her. Not that she sneaks out much—she never does stuff like this, unless it’s a Jane plan. I pretty much figured that from what I caught of the muffled phone conversations going on until eight last night. That’s when I heard the window going up, a box being hidden behind the bush, and Amy sneaking away.

She’s lucky that Mom and Dad didn’t catch her. Thanks to me. If I hadn’t gone into the kitchen, faking that cough, Amy would have been in major trouble.

That fake coughing will have earned me another day off school, once Mom sees me this morning. She’s a total overprotective mom when it comes to our health. Big deal that I had asthma as a kid, even had to carry an inhaler that I lost whenever I could. I’m way past that now. The cough is what’s left of the cold I got doing sprints in a driving cold rain last Friday night, after we once again lost a football game.

At least I won’t have to do that tonight. Someone has to deal with Coach Williams. He’s totally out of control lately.

I'm sure readers are curious about your next writing project. Can you tell us what you've got cooking up now or is that a secret?

 

As always, after working on a tough project like The Lie, I need a break from the intense writing. That means… Canoples Investigations Exposes Space Dodger is up next. Yes, the next installment of this teen sci-fi series is being set up as we speak. It’ll be a little different from the first two books. Three viewpoints instead of two. And BD will be growing quite a lot, branching out on his own but he’s still trying to figure out girls.
