Kayaking in Australia by Michelle Williams

Kayaking in Australia:

a guest post by Michelle Williams

Kayaking in Australia is pretty much guaranteed to be a great adventure that you wouldn’t want to pass up. If you are thinking about kayaking in this country, there are a few things that you should know before you embark. In this article, I am going to talk about some important aspects that you should be aware of when you are planning to kayak in Australia. Hopefully, when you finish reading this article, you will be inspired to take the plunge into the Australian waters yourself!

Kayaking is a pretty popular sport/pastime over in Oz. Inflatable kayaks, especially, are very portable, which means that they can easily take you anywhere that you want to go on the water.

Kayaks are also very strong, so you can be sure that they will keep you safe and protected as you bounce off rocks or other obstacles while navigating the waterways. Decent kayaks, in general, are very light weight, but are also very stable.

The most important factor to consider when choosing a kayak is to make sure that it suits you. There are several types of kayaks available, and the most popular one is the canoe. Canoes are known as 'canoes' due to their shape, which allows the canoe to float and also to be easy to maneuver on the water. It is also important that you choose a boat that is watertight so that the water does not leak into your kayak. You also need to make sure that the kayak has a good and solid structure because you do not want to be in kayak trouble due to a weak structure.

Once you have decided which type you want to buy, you will have to find a good and reliable place to get your new kayak from, which may also be online. Most stores will give you a free trial, which will give you the chance to try the kayak out first before you pay for it. This is a good way for you to determine whether the kayak will suit you or not. Before you actually purchase the boat, you should also consider buying some other kayak accessories such as kayak life jackets. and a kayak skirt to make sure that your kayak is protected. from any possible danger that may come in the course of your journey. When you get your kayak home, you will be happy to know that it was well-protected.

Kayaking in Australia can be done in several different locations. You could go kayak fishing, go kite surfing, go kite boarding or simply walk the beaches of Sydney and Melbourne.

If you want something completely different, you could go kayak rafting. Kayaking in Australia offers more than just water sports; it also offers some wonderful opportunities to learn a few new skills such as river walking, kayak fishing, kayak racing, and also kayak whitewater rafting. If you plan to go kite surfing, you can hire kayak whitewater rafting guides in order to become familiar with the riverbanks and also to learn how to paddle safely on the river. When it comes to river walking, you can either go river walking in Sydney or you could rent a kayak and go kayak river rafting on the Murray River.

Kayaking is a relaxing pastime that keeps you in shape while exploring places your simply cannot get to by foot or road, it’s also an awesome way to spend the whole day with the family.

So…I highly recommend it, if you want to be part of an exciting and adventurous activity, then jump into a kayak in Australia!

What to Wear Kayaking

Wearing proper clothing while kayaking is important, as you will be out in the elements and not protected from water that will be splashing onto you. Ideally, if it is warm, wear clothing that is breathable and won't trap water.

However, in colder places, a thin wetsuit is usually recommended, especially for longer trips and white water trips – where you WILL get very wet!

It's best to go early in the morning when the weather is less likely to be as windy. Also remember that the water is generally warmer in the early morning than it is at any other time of the day - it makes more sense to wear a jacket in the morning rather than a wetsuit (which is better for longer, all day trips).

From the Desk of the Editor in Chief: Submissions Call -- Solstice Publishing

From the Desk of the Editor in Chief: Submissions -- Solstice Publishing

Good morning. Welcome to my desk and all the activity upon it. Today, we’re going to talk about submissions. I’ve had so many people ask what it takes to submit to Solstice Publishing, I think it’s time to explain the process.

You just finished your book. Beta readers are telling you it’s the best book they’ve ever read. You go over your work one more time, before deciding to start the submission process. Next, you begin the research, to find the best publisher possible for your ‘baby.’

Having done this many times myself, I know just how much research you’re now involved with. Are you considering seeking publishers that specialize in the genre you write in? Do you feel you should be with a publisher that accepts multiple genres? Do you need an agent to submit your book? Finally, just what should you include in your query/submission?

The first three questions you, the author, must answer. I have the information you need for the last question.

In order to submit to Solstice Publishing, we ask you to send us your full manuscript—this should be a completed manuscript, your final as we call it. Before submitting, you should do a thorough read of your book, to ensure there isn’t anything you missed. Your book should be in a 8.5x11 document and you should start each new chapter on a new page. The first page should include the title (and sub-title if you have one) and your name (or the pseudonym you’re using). Don’t add page numbers in the header or footer. You may have either double or single spacing. All submissions should be sent to us in .DOC format and be attached in an email. We do not read submissions that have an extension other than .DOC or .DOCX, and we do not accept submissions sent through Google docs. Please don’t insert pictures or any other type of image in your submission.

Once you have attached your file, you should insert a brief letter in the body of the email. Introduce yourself. Give us a very short synopsis of your book. You also need to include your social media sites that you’ve set up for yourself as an author. Solstice Publishing requires our authors to promote their books on social media in the contract. Not including social media information will result in us not reading your submission.

Submissions are read throughout the month and we will advise you during the last week of the month if we are interested in offering a contract or if we don’t feel your book is right for us. The staff of Solstice Publishing are all published authors. We know how it feels to have to wait, to wonder if your book will receive a contract or not. That being said, we do not accept every book that is submitted to us. We recently changed our criteria and are only accepting a few books a month.

I hope to see many new and exciting books coming our way soon!

What Are Wine Legs? by Bill Marcia

What Are Wine Legs? The Indicators of a Wine's Alcohol and Sugar Content, and Their Effect on Consumption:

a guest post by Bill Marcia

Have you ever heard of the term wine 'legs'? Do you know what they look like and what they signify? Let’s find out more…

Photo by Lana Abie on Unsplash

The wine’s legs are the droplets that you see on the walls of the glass after swirling your drink. They are a demonstration of the Gibbs-Marangoni Effect, an event that occurs because of the difference in the evaporation rates of alcohol and water.

Remember that wine is composed of alcohol and water. Alcohol has a faster evaporation rate than water, and its surface tension is also lower. When exposed to the air, alcohol will evaporate quickly and leave the water behind. The water – because it has higher surface tension and a slower evaporation rate – will accumulate on the glass surface. Gravity will also affect the water pulling it downwards and causing it to leave a trail and form the legs. Because this phenomenon involves evaporation, the rate of leg formation will be affected by the humidity and temperature of the surroundings.

What Do the Legs Tell You About the Wine and Its Properties?

Despite the common misconception, the legs of the wine do not indicate its quality. The legs are more related to the level of alcohol in the wine and its sweetness. The higher the alcohol content of the wine, the more wine legs it will typically form at a given temperature.

·         Sweeter wines have higher sugar content so they will produce more viscous tears.

·         Examining the legs of wine in different seasons will also produce varied findings due to variations in humidity and temperature.

What Are Wine Legs Called and How Can You Examine Them?

The French call them "tears." Others refer to them as church windows, while some describe them as the Gibbs-Marangoni Effect. You can examine them by observing their formation. To recreate this phenomenon, you can take a glass of wine and then hold it an angle so that the wine will flow on one side. Then, put the glass in an upright position and observe its rate of flow (viscosity) as well as the density of the forming legs. The more legs you see, the sweeter your wine and the higher its alcohol content. The higher alcohol content can also be observed by a more significant warming sensation at the back of your throat when you drink your wine.

If you want to build your wine tasting and evaluation skills, you can compare the wine legs of different types of wine. Also, you can cross-reference your findings with the labels of the wines. Note that for the tears or legs to form, the alcohol should be allowed to evaporate. In its absence, there will be no tears observed. Shake a closed wine bottle, and you will see that no legs will form because there's no evaporation occurring.
