Today, fellow author Michael Poeltl is stopping by to talk
about his latest book !
Hello! Thanks for having me.
My pleasure! Let me ask a few questions since
you're here...
All right.
An Angry Earth is an environmentally charged picture book
warning against the footprint humanity has, and is, leaving on our
planet. A fictional Earth is represented in the book which
experiences devastating natural disasters due to abuses to their
planet. The book was released on October 12th and can be found both in Print
and Kindle format on Amazon. Published through CreateSpace, it is available
through their online store as well.
Interesting!
So, what inspired you to write this book? How did you get into writing cautionary picture books?
Initially this story idea came to me after reading to my six year old daughter one evening. I could no longer keep my eyes open and closed whichever book we were reading, turned out the light and just made up a story on the fly. That's where An Angry Earth first took form. With my daughter asleep I got up and wrote down what had come out of my mouth and developed it
from there. A picture book seemed the right genre to use to tell the story, and as an interpretive illustrator, I knew I could take advantage of my own skill set to further the story line.
I've been writing as long as I can remember and have published nine books. My first foray into writing was The Judas Syndrome, a Post-Apocalyptic trilogy, so I guess you could say my go-to genre is Dystopian.
Great!
Tell us...what, do you feel, sets your book apart from other books in the genre?
An Angry Earth is a tell-it-like-it-is, blunt explanation
of what will happen to our own Earth (and ourselves) if we do nothing to
stop the pollution and destruction of the planet which sustains us. It is
unapologetically graphic and in no way politically correct. I'm tired of seeing
our young people disregarding the planet which provides for them, and
if a scared straight approach is offensive to some, it's not the book for you; but
I urge parents to read this book to their children and to themselves and get
the message out there that environmentalism through sustainable energy and
organic produce is where we need to be in the next few years - or else.
All right.
Well, it's definitely a topic we should be thinking about.
There was a time when humanity thought the world rode on the
back of a giant turtle who swam through the constellations. A metaphor which
suggests the world is alive - and it is alive. Each species plays its part in
sustaining our delicate eco-system. You included. You; the most advanced of all
life on earth.
If you could not swim, would you kill the turtle whose back
you lived on, to live more comfortably?
What happens when you use Mother Earth and plunder her
natural resources, poisoning her rivers and oceans with chemicals and plastics,
clear cutting ancient forests and dumping carbon monoxide into the atmosphere?
There are consequences to your actions and inactions. This story illustrates
what happens when the earth says...ENOUGH!
Once upon a time, a rumbling from beneath the people’s feet
rose up and shook them about. They had never experienced such a rumbling.
They referenced their history books and discovered that at
no time in the history of their world had there ever been a rumbling so fierce.
Wow! It certainly sounds intriguing!
Honestly, because I run the gambit for genres, I have no
idea. This book is very fresh and I am still spending my free time marketing it.
When a new book idea comes, I'll know it. I'm excited for that day, but in the
meantime, I have nine other books to curl up with.
Good point!
Thanks so much for
stopping by to tell us about An Angry Earth, Michael!
Thank you for allowing me to visit, Marie!
Readers, you'll just have to pick up a copy of this fascinating picture book about what could happen if we don't take measures to nurture our environment.
Here is the blurb for An Angry Earth.
It starts with a rumbling under foot.
Then the ocean reaches for the sky and the land is lost to the sea.
The water recedes and the soil becomes as dust.
And all at once you realize the choices you’ve made are the reasons you have arrived at this end.
An environmentally charged and fully illustrated telling of what will happen if we do not curb our current abuses.
Save the world. Save yourself. Read the book.
